Over the course of your Muay Thai journey you will have a lot of trainers and fighters who help influence your style. While my Thai trainers Run and Dee helped me develop my Muay Thai technique and rhythm, I also learned a lot from my training partner Dane Sky. Dane is a seasoned fighter out of Australia (40+ fights) who helped me work on a number of aspects of my game.

While Thai trainers are good at correcting technique and making sure you learn the “Thai Style,” there are many things you will not learn from your trainers. Unless you can speak fluent Thai, there is a language barrier that will exist between you and your trainer. When it comes to ring strategy and other fighting tactics, experience is where you will learn these aspects of Muay Thai.

Luckily, I was able to meet Dane Sky after my first year in Thailand. Whenever I needed to pick someone’s brain about a topic or strategy, Dane was always the guy I would ask.

Dane is the type of fighter that everyone should aspire to be like. After witnessing a dozen of his fights, I realized that he was quite possibly the toughest guy I have ever seen.

Whenever Dane got hit with a shot that would drop 95% of the fighters out there (or even when he had his skull broken in a fight), he would always look at his opponents and smile after taking the punishment. Dane is the perfect mix of crazy, tough, skilled, competitive and very humble.

Before Dane left Thailand to open up his new gym Team Sky Thai Boxing, I was able to get him to demonstrate a few of his favorite techniques that he used to win his fights. The following are a few of Dane’s favorite Muay Thai techniques:

The “Lazy” Left Kick

Why is this technique so effective?

Whenever you have an aggressive opponent who is charging forward towards you, they will leave themselves open to be kicked. The difference between the “Lazy” left kick and the normal switch kick is you don’t switch your legs on the kick. This makes the quick much faster and allows you to land it from a solid defensive position.

Keep in mind this kick only works if you are in range or have your opponent coming into your range. If you are standing for apart, you are better off using the traditional switch kick so you can step forward into the kick.

The “Lazy” left is an excellent move that can be used whenever you are dealing with someone who is trying to knock you out with punches.

The following clip showcases Dane practicing what he is preaching. He uses the “lazy” left to stop the forward motion of his heavy handed opponents. 

The key to this kick is timing. If you have someone rushing into your range with punches, a well placed kick can alter their attack.

The Lead Leg Block

Why is this technique so effective?

Whenever you have an opponent that is trying to force their way into the clinch, the lead leg block is a great way to prevent them from entry. To pull off this block you need to have good posture, balance and control of your opponent.

If you do not have control of your opponents arms you will not be able to control your opponent and they can easily sweep you off balance. The key to this move is balance and control. This is something you have to work on in training until you can develop the proper timing.

Notice how Pakorn is shifting on his back leg, adjusting his balance as his opponent is trying to push forward. Very difficult to develop this skill.

Why is this technique so effective?

The key to winning in Muay Thai is to be good at the basics. If you can land a technique effectively throughout the fight, you will win. It doesn’t matter if you know how to do a spinning back elbow or a flying knee, what matters is scoring points.

This technique is highly effective because it works. If you want to sweep your opponent, this is an easy technique to pull off and if you get the timing right it will work.

One of the reasons why Dane is able to beat most of his foreign opponents is because he keeps everything simple. He doesn’t do flash, he only does substance. While this sweep is a basic technique, there is a reason why everyone uses it in the ring.

The key to executing this sweep is to coordinate the pulling motion of your arm and leg so that you can off balance your opponent.

Notice how Dane establishes his position first inside of the clinch. This allows him to throw his opponent with ease.

Final Thoughts

One of Dane’s biggest strengths as a fighter is that he knows how to win fights. He doesn’t care about trying to land anything flashy that looks cool, he cares about scoring points. Every single one of these techniques are simple, yet highly effective.

If you can incorporate these techniques into your game you will have three useful tools that can help you sway the fight in your favor. Remember the key is to work on these techniques with a partner first, and then start adding them into your sparring and clinching sessions.

Timing and patience are the two keys to developing any new aspect of your game. You won’t be able to pull these off overnight, but with time and practice you will be able to land these highly effective techniques.
