This article is going to break down everything you need to know about Top King Shorts and give you a breakdown of some of my favorite Top King shorts that I have owned.

Quality of Materials

While you may be tempted to go with a cheap pair of Muay Thai shorts, it is important to know what materials your shorts are made out of. If you purchase shorts made from a bad material, they will become transparent when they get wet.

Top King uses a polyester satin material in all of their Muay Thai shorts. This material is excellent because it dries very fast and it is extremely durable. This is an important trait in a country like Thailand where the weather is always hot and very humid throughout the day.

The shorts have an elastic waist band to ensure that you get a good fit in the shorts when you are wearing them. Depending on how the shorts fit you, you can either tighten or loosen the band around the waist to suit your needs.

Top King SHortsWhen you compare the materials used in Top King to other brands like Fairtex and Twins, they are exactly the same. If you want cheaper shorts you can find ones that are made with Nylon, but the quality is extremely bad, and you can often see through the material.

The life span of the Top King shorts will depend on how much you use them. If you plan on using one pair of shorts for all of your training, expect them to get worn out much faster than if you rotate different pairs. I typically find that the first thing to go on the shorts is the elastic waistbands. They usually lose their elasticity after a few years and become a little bit stretched out.

This all depends on how many times you use the shorts and how often the get wet. I recommend you keep at least 6 pairs of Muay Thai shorts so that you can have a fresh pair for every training session. Always use a new clean pair of shorts to ensure that they smell good.

Aesthetics

The biggest strength of Top King Boxing is they have a strong selection of designs to choose from. With dozens of different prints and styles to choose from, you are bound to find something that you will like.

Top King Retro Shorts

As you can see from this image, the retro shorts have a different side material and are much shorter than the regular shorts

In addition to the regular line of Muay Thai shorts, Top King also has a specific line of shorts called the Top King Retro Muay Thai shorts. These shorts are made with a thinner waistband and are designed to be much shorter in length. The purpose of this design is to give you flexibility in your kicks and ensure that you don’t need to roll up your legs when you are training.

For people who don’t mind exposing a little more of their thighs, these are great shorts to have. That being said, you will need to get used to exposing more of your skin in training.

Overall, the look and feel of the Top King shorts as top quality and are exactly what you would expect when you pay top dollar for a pair of Muay Thai shorts.

Sizing

The sizing of Muay Thai shorts can be tricky because everyone has a different build and preferred length of shorts. Some guys like having their shorts hiked way up their legs while others like to keep their shorts longer. In Thailand, the general rule of thumb is shorter is better, which is quite contrary to MMA shorts.

I am a size 30-31 waist, and I own Large shorts. I could probably squeeze in the medium size shorts, but they would definitely be too tight around the waist. That being said, I like more shorts shorter than most people, so don’t base your size on my own preference.

This chart below works pretty well for choosing the size of your Top King shorts.

Top King Shorts size chart

Once you get into the larger sizes, I honestly have no idea how they would fit. Most people will do well to stick to the M-XL range of shorts, unless you like wearing them a little bit more loose you can go a size higher. If you already own a pair of Top King or Twins Shorts, you can use the same shorts you have been using. Fairtex shorts are much larger, so don’t use the same size you do as your Fairtex shorts.

Price

The price of Top King shorts falls pretty much in line with all the other big players on the market. Expect to pay between $40-60 on each pair of shorts depending on what particular style and size that you choose. If you chose some of the larger sized options you might have to get them custom made as they are not often readily available.

If you want to buy cheaper Muay Thai shorts you will usually have to compromise on the material that they use. Avoid wearing any brand that uses Nylon because that material is cheap and you can see through it when they get wet.

To get the lowest price for your short I suggest you purchase them on Amazon.com or check other online retailers that can offer you free shipping on the items.

The Final Word

If you are looking to purchase new Muay Thai shorts I suggest you take a look at some of the products that Top King offers. I have owned a few pairs of Top King shorts and I have been happy with every one of them. If you take care of your shorts you should get a few years of good use out of each one.

For those of you who like to wear tighter shorts, you can consider getting the Top King Retro Muay Thai shorts. These shorts are made to fit very tight and expose a lot of a fighter’s leg. If you like rolling up your shorts than these shorts are definitely an option you should consider.

When it comes to selecting Muay Thai shorts, it really comes down to personal tastes and finding something that you like. Between Twins and Top King, those are the two most popular brands that people use in Thailand.
