The Combat Banchamek fight card that took place in Surin was Buakaw’s first show as a promoter and fighter on his own card. He put together an impressive 17 fight card that featured some of the best fighters in the world in a free show. Unlike Thai Fight which showcases superstar Thai fighters like Yodsanklai and Sudsakorn easily beating foreigners in their fights, this fight card actually had interesting matchups. Overall, this was a very successful show that I would like to see continue.
The main event saw Buakaw outpoint a very tough Victor Nagbe who showed up to fight. Unlike many of other Buakaw’s previous matchups, he didn’t easily overwhelm his opponent. Nagbe showed no signs of fear as he aggressively went at the Thai champion with elbows and strong punches. He mixed it up with good sweeps and nice knees in the clinch. Although Nagbe put on a strong performance, it was not enough to beat Buakaw who showcased why he is one of the best fighters in the sport.
Buakaw’s defense was sharp today as he would use his head movement to dodge a lot of the incoming punches and elbows from the challenger. The fight was close up until the end where Buakaw landing some nice body kicks that cemented the win on his debut show. I was impressed that Buakaw actually gave himself a tough opponent and wasn’t looking for an easy win. Good fight from both competitors.
The co-main events featured Saenchai against a Kamen Picken which was a battle of David vs Goliath. If you want to watch a fight of short vs tall then watch this one. Saenchai’s opponent was a full foot taller than him and must have outweighed him by 10 kg (20+lbs). Right from the start of the fight Kamen came forword giving away his game plan of clinching the shorter Saenchai. This strategy worked for the first minute until Saenchai started stepping up his game and making Kamen pay every time he came forward.
Saenchai ended up winning the fight on points in a fight the showcased a lot of skill vs a huge reach advantage. This was a very entertaining fight as Saenchai looked like a little person beside his opponent. Although Saenchai gave up a huge size advantage, he easily won the fight on points and dropped Kamen with a nicely timed elbow in the second round. The third round saw Saenchai coast to and easy victory by evading his opponents clinch attempts.
The final co-main event between Rungravee vs Mathias Gallo Cassarino (aka Mathias Sitsongpeenong). This was a very close fight that saw a very dissapointed Rungravee get awarded a draw. He was cleary upset at the decision as he couldn’t hide his emotions after the fight. Mathias showcased his talent in this fight and is definitely a fighter that people should be attention to.
